Leprosy is a slow-to-develop bacterial infection with Mycobacterium leprae, the lelprosy bacillus, and involves the cooler parts of the body: the skin and the mucous membranes of the nose.

M.leprae is the only bacterium with a predilection fro peripheral nerves.
